Nasal Resonance Disorders

Cleft Palate

Cleft palate is a common birth defect in which there is an opening into the lip and/or palate.

This can lead to ongoing difficulties with eating and speech. It is a journey involving sometimes several surgeries and orthodontics, often not finishing until the end of high school or University years.

Cleft palate can lead to difficulties with eating and drinking and speech. Commonly, hypernasality (increased nasal resonance) can present as a feature. Jenni assesses and treats older children, adolescents and young adults presenting with:

  • Imprecise articulation (cleft-type errors)
  • Disorders of resonance (hyper/hypo/mixed nasality)
  • Oronasal fistulas

Due to her attachment to a local hospital-based cleft-craniofacial team, she is able to readily liaise with orthodontic colleagues as well as plastic surgeons.
