Literacy and Reading

Literacy / Phonological Awareness

"Learning to read and write is a crucial part of a child’s development and an essential skill for an adult. Being able to read and write allows a child to participate fully in their education. Being literate means that a person can follow written instructions, fill in forms, find information on-line and in books and write letters and emails and send texts."

Speech Pathologists have specialist knowledge of oral language (speaking and listening) and the relationship between language and literacy development. These include: phonological awareness, vocabulary development, sentence structure and listening comprehension.

Jenni assesses for literacy difficulty and has programmes to assist students with their literacy skills. As she works closely with local schools, she is aware of the curriculum and expectations for progress in reading and spelling from an early age.  Jenni follows an explicit, structured, systematic multisensory phonics approach, including the MultiLit programmes developed by Macquarie University.  She can recommend suitable book series to help with reading progression and has a number of other programmes, resources and Apps which she uses as part of an interventions which are tailored to each individual student’s needs.
